The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition
2000 | Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival | View Film Stills
In August 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton, a renowned explorer, set sail with twenty-seven men on his ship, The Endurance. His plan was to lead the first expedition across the Antarctic continent.
His ship was beset in heavy sea ice and eventually crushed off the coast of Antarctica. Marooned on four feet of ice over 8,000-foot deep water, Shackleton and his crew survived some 635 days and nights without proper shelter or rations in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. Eventually, by small boat and on foot, Shackleton was able to get to safety and then rescue his entire crew.
Based on the best-selling book by Caroline Alexander, The Endurance is considered by many experts to be the greatest of all adventures. Miraculously, much of the expedition was captured on film and in pictures by the ship's photographer. To make The Endurance, George Butler and his film crew went to all of the original locations to capture this astonishing story in color in perhaps the most remote location shoot ever recorded.

Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure IMAX®, 2001
Winner of the Giant Screen Theater Association 2001 Awards for Best Film and Best Cinematography
Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure recounts the extraordinary true story of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914-1916 British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which many consider "the greatest survival story of all time." This expedition has become a testament to heroism and human endurance -- Shackleton and all of the 27 members of his crew survived for nearly two years in the barren, frigid Antarctic when their ship, the Endurance, was caught in pack ice and eventually crushed.
The giant-screen film features stunning images of Antarctica and recreations film sin 1999 and 2000, plus the remarkable original still photography and 35mm motion picture footage of Frank Hurley, the official photographer for the Endurance expedition.
